It’s been a few days since the beta for Bungie’s Destiny came to an end, and now that the experience has had time to sink in, I’ve been thinking back over it and trying to decide whether or not to pre-order the game. I had enjoyed the alpha test a few weeks back, but because I hadn’t pre-ordered I wasn’t guaranteed a code for beta access. Fortunately, Twitter buddy @Nemesis_7T4 had some going spare and was kind enough to let me have one.
Having seen several videos on YouTube from people who have fitted cameras to their WLtoys V913 helicopters, I decided it was something I wanted to do myself. I have the Lucky Boy 9961 which has a built-in camera, but that only records at 640×480, and being a coaxial helicopter means it can struggle outdoors on anything other than perfectly calm day. In fact, our lawn slopes a little, and on a hot day the 9961 can even struggle to fly up the garden as the warm air currents roll down. Being a more powerful helicopter, the V913 doesn’t suffer this problem and generally handles much better in a wider range of conditions.
I finally got my hands on the WLtoys V913! I initially ordered this heli from Amazon at the end of July, but the two I received both arrived with broken transmitters and were returned for a refund. This model has otherwise proven tough to track down in the UK. I searched the websites of numerous model/hobby stores and not one had any mention of it. I could have imported from a few online suppliers in the US and the far east, but then of course you have customs import duty and (possibly) a fairly hefty return postage cost if there’s anything wrong with it.
So I’ve been checking back with Amazon every so often for new stock, with no luck. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I found someone selling through Amazon – Big Boyz; they only had one left in stock, so I thought I’d have one last try before giving up on it. I’m sure glad I did!
UPDATE – 21:18, 3rd August: Had an e-mail from Amazon saying that they won’t send out another replacement, the meat of which is this:
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had the same problem with your replacement order.
I can certainly understand that you were not expecting this kind of trouble when you’ve placed your order.
As you’ve received a damaged item twice, we’d like to look into this further to make sure it doesn’t happen again to you or to other customers. In a situation like this, we don’t send out another replacement as it’s likely that there’s an issue with our stock of the item.
Kindly return the item to us to receive a full refund
That is absolutely fair enough. It’s great that they’re looking into the issue, rather than blindly sending out more potentially faulty items to me or anyone else. The only problem for me is that when I last looked online, I couldn’t find anywhere else in the UK selling this model. That was a few months ago though, so hopefully another search will turn up some other options.
For several months, I’ve had my eye on the WLtoys V913 4-channel helicopter. My birthday has just come and gone, and I was lucky enough to get some money, so I finally decided to buy. It arrived on 1st August, and I spent 30 minutes or so in the garden taking photos for a blog post, as I’ve done with all my other models.
UPDATE: Mika has returned to us! He suddenly appeared at the back door at roughly 9:45pm tonight. He has quite clearly lost some weight, but nothing major… in fact, he was slightly overweight before anyway! Other than that, he doesn’t seem at all fazed. There’s no sign of damage from fighting or trying to escape from somewhere, his tail is up, and he’s purring readily.
